Who gets Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma is a form of skin cancer that typically occurs in people who've had a lot of sun exposure. This can be the case if you've spent a lot of time in the sun, don't wear sunscreen often, or have exposure to things like radiation, arsenic, or immune-suppressing drugs. People who are older or who have lighter skin tones are more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma as well. It's important to note, though, that nearly anyone is susceptible to this condition.

What are the causes of Basal Cell Carcinoma?

The most common cause for basal cell carcinoma, which happens when your body's basal cells' DNA mutates, is prolonged sun exposure. This tends to affect your cells' DNA, which can result in a mutation. In other cases, such as where basal cell carcinoma occurs in skin that's not typically exposed to sunlight, the cause is not entirely clear.

Whatever the cause of your basal cell carcinoma, you have options for treatment. At Elias Dermatology, we're here to help.

What are common treatments for Basal Cell Carcinoma?

To treat basal cell carcinoma, surgerical removal is the most-used option. Traditional cutterage can be used, but the gold standard is a procedure called Moh's surgery. This procedure removes cancerous cells effectively while leaving healthy tissue in-tact.

Other options include freezing the lesion off with cryotherapy, photodynamic therapy, topical treatments, or radiation. If your cancer has spread, treatment will often include medications or chemotherapy to reduce the spread and kill the cancer.

Which treatment will be best for you depends on your personal medical history, lifestyle, and specific basal call carcinoma. The experts at Elias Dermatology will help you review and choose procedure that's right for you.

How long does it take to treat Basal Cell Carcinoma?

Your length of treatment will depend on your unique situation. In some cases, such as surgical removal, the growth will be gone immediately. In other cases, treatment may take a week or more to work. If you have questions about basal cell carcinoma or your treatment options, we're here to help. Let's start with a free consultation.
